چکیده

In this paper, we study the achievable rates of practical ultra-wideband (UWB) systems using pulse position modulation (PPM) and transmitted-reference (TR) transceivers. TR obviates the need for complex channel estimation, which is particularly challenging in the context of UWB. Based on an upper bound we derived for the error probability with random coding, we establish that for SNR values of practical interest, PPM-UWB with TR can achieve rates on the order of C(∞) = P/N0 (nats/second).

On the achievable rates of ultra-wideband PPM with non-coherent detection in multipath environments

In this work we investigate the achievable rates of ultra-wideband (UWB) systems using a m-ary pulse position modulation (PPM) with non-coherent receivers in multipath fading environments. We derive a random coding bound on the achievable information rates and highlight the influence of system parameters (bandwidth, delay spread). We also investigate the effect of the use of hard decisions prio...

A Theoretical Study on the Effects of Timing Jitter on the Performance of Multiple Access Impulse Radio

In February of 2002, the FCC approved the use of ultra-wideband (UWB) technology for commercial use. UWB has since been considered as a solution for the next generation of personal area networks (PANs) and wireless local area networks (WLANs). UWB (or impulse) radio employs short duration pulses to communicate, thereby spreading signal energy very “thinly” from DC to a few gigahertz [1]. The “u...

Optimal Receiver for Space Time Spreading across a Time Hopping PPM over Ultra Wideband Saleh-Valenzuela MIMO Channel

This paper outlines a technique which can use multiple transmit antennas to send more than one binary bit using the same number of transmit antennas over a single transmission. It uses Ultra Wideband orthogonal pulse position modulation to achieve this, with the receiver employing a Rake receiver and a Maximum Ratio Combiner optimal detector. This is done over a Space Time Spreading Time Hoppin...

On the Achievable Rates of Uwb Systems

Abstract— In this work we study the achievable rates of memoryless signaling strategies adapted to ultraWideBand (UWB) multipath fading channels. We focus on strategies which do not have explicit knowledge of the instanteneous channel realization, but may have knowledge of the channel statistics. We evaluate the average mutual information of the general binary flash-signaling rates as a functio...

Optimum receiver performance of TH-PPM ultra wideband system in multiple user interference

This paper demonstrates optimum receiver performance in terms of bit error rate (BER) for time hopping pulse position modulation (TH-PPM) ultra wideband (UWB) system in multiple user interference environment for indoor radio communication. Equal gain combining and selective gain combining have been demonstrated in terms of ideal RAKE (ARAKE), selective RAKE (SRAKE) and partial RAKE (PRAKE) rece...
